Rebecca Correa-Skartwed
SANDOVAL COUNTY COMMISSIONER
About Rebecca
260 Years of New Mexico in Her Blood.
My name is Rebecca Correa‑Skartwed. In 1765, my ancestors arrived in Placitas, New Mexico, bringing only what was essential. Granted the San Antonio de Las Huertas Land Grant by the Spanish Crown, they fought — sometimes shedding blood — to preserve it for those who would come after them.
Many generations of my family have served on the San Antonio de las Huertas Land Grant's Board of Trustees. Following in their footsteps, I became President of the San Antonio de las Huertas Land Grant — the first woman ever to hold that position. In 2016, I was appointed by the Governor to the New Mexico Land Grant Council, and soon after, I was elected Vice‑Chair.
Today, I serve as an Advancement Strategist raising state appropriations for a historic New Mexico institution. I am also Director of the New Mexico Underserved Student Opportunity Program — which brings students from across the state together, teaching genealogy, New Mexico Spanish (the first program in the state to do so), Indigenous Wisdom curriculum, and a Diné language program. Every student enrolled participates entirely free of charge.
I live in Placitas because my family's roots are here. I am deeply concerned about water issues. Water is life in New Mexico, and protecting this limited resource is non‑negotiable. That is why I am running for County Commissioner.
A Family That Serves
Service Is In Our Blood.
Our son began serving as a Police Service Aide with the City of Albuquerque and later continued his work in law enforcement with Bernalillo County. My oldest daughter dedicated 15 years to caring for others as a paramedic and nurse, and my youngest daughter served six years as an Army Reservist.
My husband and I raised our children to understand that serving their community is both a privilege and a responsibility. Their paths reflect that belief, and I carry that same commitment into my work with local agencies.
Because of my family's experiences, I have a deep respect for the men and women who protect our communities every day. I understand the sacrifices they make, the risks they face, and the support they deserve.
Many people have looked after my children as they served, and I feel a sincere responsibility to stand with those who continue to serve all of us.
